About Me
My name is Sharon Mitchell. I was born in Oakland, CA, second child of nine. I got married and had one child. I got a divorce and became a single parent who made sure my daughter got the best education that was available. I worked for the DOD as a Budget Analyst and when DOD closed down all of their activities in the San Francisco Bay Area, I was sent to North Carolina. I worked there from 1994 until I retired in 2010.
All my life I have always enjoyed helping people. While I was in North Carolina, I created a women organization, ‘Sisters On the Move of Eastern North Carolina. We educated, informed and honored people and businesses in the community. I also chaired the NAACP annual banquet two years in a roll.
In 2012 I moved to New Orleans where my only child married a wonderful man from there. I also found I had not properly prepared myself for retirement. I had a pension, thank God, but learning how to live on half of your salary is a little challenging. I had dreamed of traveling and just doing things. I found finding a job at my age was near impossible. No one wanted to hire a person over 55.
So, I started volunteering for AARP. I volunteer in the only AARP Resource Center Office in the country. I volunteer one day a week and whenever there are events. I’m also an AARP “Life Reimage” presenter. I truly enjoy my volunteering work. But it doesn’t put money in my pocket. So what does a Senior Citizen do?
