Why You Should Always Do What Is Morally Right

Every part of the human body has its function. For example, we see with our eyes, our ears are for hearing and we talk and eat with our mouth. A person who loses the use of any part of their body, whether partially or completely, will not be able to perform at full physical capability. Such a person is said to be physically handicapped. Similarly, the human mind exhibits various capabilities that serve different purposes. Again, let me cite a couple of examples. The mental capacity of drive makes it possible for us to sustain effort on a task. And our intelligence is the mental capacity that enables us to learn, understand and know things. There is an important capacity of the mind which we do not apply as rigorously as we should. This is our conscience. It tells us whether our actions are right or wrong. Our conscience is essentially a moral compass that is meant to aid us in determining the right way to go. Unfortunately, many people do not respond well enough to their conscience or bother with morality. In a given situation, their primary concern is, "What is in it for me?" Not, "What is the right thing to do?" Well, here is why you should always strive to do what is morally right. We are creative beings. As such, we are supposed to be constructive and productive, and not be destructive. A creative being that performs at their full creative potential will be totally constructive and fully productive. This happens when the moral ingredient is present because effort is then always applied in the right direction. In fact, the efficiency and effectiveness of a creative being are dependent on their moral standard. To express this point simply, someone who always does things the right way will produce results that are the best possible they are capable of achieving. Someone else who does not bother with morality and does not always do things the right way may produce results. However, such results will not be the best possible they can achieve. But is it so important that we function at our full creative potential? Yes, it is. When the industrial machines of a factory owner are working at full capacity, production is at the optimum. That is when he makes the most profit, all things being equal. Likewise, we are happiest and are most successful when we perform at our full creative capability. At that level of performance, we produce the best possible results we are capable of achieving. And this happens when we always apply effort in the right direction or when we consistently do things the right way. By contrast, when a person is unresponsive to their conscience and is unconcerned with morality, they do not function at their full creative capability. As in the case of physical disability, they are handicapped. Although in this instance, they can be described as spiritually handicapped. Life will not be totally fulfilling or completely rewarding for the spiritually handicapped. They will not experience the full joy of living or attain the highest quality of life achievable. Clearly, it is in our best interest to always do what is morally right. Morality enhances our performance and improves our quality of life. It has intrinsic value.
